Mohle Drive Residence
-
The Mohle Drive Residence is the first completed work by the firm. It is Burton’s home, where he lives with his wife. It has also served as the home to two children, numerous dogs, and a bird. At the time, “Baldridge” was just Burton and Jim Faircloth in rented space across from Uchi (a celebrated sushi restaurant in Austin).
The modest size of the house was driven by Burton and his wife, who wished to build smaller so that they might place a heightened focus on materials, craftsmanship and detailing. The home feels much larger than its 2,450 conditioned square feet.
While there was initial opposition from the neighborhood (then listed in the National Register of Historic Places), the structure is now well-loved for its modest scale, crisp detailing, and lush vegetation. The house has been photographed by several photographers, each lending their own perspective.

Looking through architectural websites, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that these are homes, first and foremost. Reflecting on his 17 years in this house, Burton has loved experiencing the project with these talented photographers but feels these curated shots almost miss the point.
