This house is a reimagining of an existing 1959 brick bungalow. Our clients’ previous home was a striking mid-century modern structure in California. In designing this new residence, the firm was excited to step out of its comfort zone and design in a way that simultaneously looked to the past and to the future for inspiration.
Our clients (both talented designers) requested a modern house with a nod to American mid-century architecture. The design has been a collaborative process resulting in an elegant and quiet exterior coupled with a colorful and nuanced interior.
Questioning the modern impulse for open plan living, the house instead consists of a collection of programmed spaces that offer a variety of moods and atmospheres to its inhabitants. The resultant home is, variously, expansive and cozy, lively and muted.
